EPM Channel recently completed a 360 degree survey of the Finance function in both large- and mid-sized companies, with 40% of the respondents coming from marketing, operations, and other non-finance fields. This 360 degree view enabled analysts who worked on the survey to compare the responses of both finance and non-finance professionals in order to gain unique perspectives.

This 360 degree survey of the finance function is timely as the economy continues to pick up. From my perspective, it is a thoughtful, well-managed survey instrument with insightful results that resonate. However, it’s important to be mindful what “game changer” might mean. For those companies that are financially healthy at this point, the CFO could have been a game changer guiding the organization through challenging times by saying “no.” Often, this is through recommending to the CEO not to follow the direction of other C-level contributors that don’t understand how to measure overall risk and how best to deploy limited financial resources, especially in a difficult economic climate. This natural, healthy tension between a CFO and other C-level contributors will always color such surveys.
